Please tell us a bit about yourself.
I am Masis Usenmez, EFIAP, GPU CROWN 2, SSS/B. Born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1979, I am currently based in Rennes, France. Since 2008, I have been dedicated to capturing rare moments of everyday people on the street, using my photography to offer profound insights into human life and culture.My educational background includes obtaining a degree in Photography from Anadolu University in 2013, followed by the completion of my Master of Photography from Marmara University in 2019.
Throughout my career, I have established a notable presence in the photography world, actively participating in numerous competitions and achieving over 300 acceptances and medals. With a particular passion for street and documentary photography, I skillfully utilize light and shadow to create a surreal atmosphere within my captivating black-and-white images. As a result, I have received various prestigious awards, such as the Collectif du Hérrison Grand Prix and the Photofolie Prix "Noir et blanc" in 2020.
In addition to my success in competitions, I have also showcased my work in numerous exhibitions spanning across Turkey, Europe, and the USA, including the Arles Off Festival and Paris Photo in France.
What mediums do you use to express yourself?
In my artistic expression, I primarily utilize digital photography as my medium. It allows me to capture moments with precision and flexibility. However, over the past few years, I have also developed a fondness for analog photography. There is something special about the process of shooting with film cameras that brings me a sense of tranquility and Zen-like moments.I have also been exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance and create images with a similar aesthetic to traditional photography. This experimental approach enables me to push the boundaries of my artistic expression and discover new possibilities in merging technology and art. By leveraging AI, I can delve into unique visual interpretations and further expand the artistic realm of my work.
What is your professional gear?
I have a deep love for cameras, and I believe it's the photographer, not the camera, that truly makes the pictures special. From starting with my father's Zenith and Yashica cameras to venturing into the digital world with the Sony a350 and Canon 5d Mark II, I have always been fascinated by the art of photography. Currently, I embrace both digital and film with the Ricoh GRIII and Sony A7III as my primary tools, complemented by lenses like the 40mm 2.8 and 80mm 1.8. I am also an avid camera collector and, as part of my involvement in the NFT space, have initiated the 99 Cameras Club, with plans to open a camera museum in Paris. Cameras, whether digital or film, are not just tools to me; they are gateways to express my artistic vision and capture the beauty of the world around me.Are you a Solo or Collaborative artist?
As a photographer, I predominantly operate as a solo artist. When I'm out shooting on the streets, I prefer to work alone, immersing myself in the environment and capturing the candid moments that unfold before me. I find solitude conducive to my creative process and the ability to connect intimately with my subjects.However, I firmly believe in the power of collaboration when it comes to supporting and creating impactful projects. While I enjoy working independently, I recognize the strength and potential of collaborative efforts. Collaborations provide an opportunity to join forces with other artists, combining our unique perspectives and skills to create something greater than what we could achieve individually.
I have engaged in collaborative endeavors in various contexts, including within the realm of Web3. I have collaborated with AI artist Bariş Varujan Kabalak, our collaborative work “Inner Sights” is on Foundation. And I have collaborated with typography and 3D abstract artist Sercan through our joint project, NudexGM. These collaborations enable us to explore new artistic horizons and contribute to a larger creative vision.
Masis Üsenmez’s Personal Exhibition, 2023 France How do you/your perception of art differ from others?
My perception of art differs from others in several ways. Firstly, I focus on capturing candid moments in street and documentary photography, aiming to evoke emotions and offer glimpses into diverse human narratives. Additionally, my exploration of both digital and analog photography, along with the integration of AI technology, adds a unique dimension to my artistic approach. By blending traditional and innovative techniques, I strive to communicate my perspective and invite viewers to engage with my art in meaningful ways.Is there a fav artist or an artwork that inspired you/your style?
As an artist, I draw inspiration from various photographers who have made significant contributions to the field. While it's challenging to pinpoint just one favorite artist or artwork, photographers from the 1960s and 1970s have had a profound impact on my style and artistic vision. Artists such as Henri-Cartier Bresson, Elliot Erwitt, Robert Capa, and Robert Frank have left an indelible mark on the world of photography with their compelling and thought-provoking imagery.
Additionally, I find inspiration in the work of color photographers like Alex Webb, whose vibrant and dynamic compositions have pushed the boundaries of visual storytelling. These influential photographers have shaped my understanding of capturing decisive moments, observing human life, and using light, composition, and color to convey powerful narratives.While these photographers have been significant influences on my style, my artistic journey involves a continuous process of self-discovery and exploration, combining elements from various sources of inspiration to develop a distinct voice and vision within the realm of photography.
What was the last Exhibition you visited?
I recently had the opportunity to open my exhibition featuring photographs I captured during my visit to India in 2019, specifically documenting the Holy Festival. Before that, I had the pleasure of attending the La Gacilly photo festival, where I found inspiration from the works of esteemed photographers such as Salgado, Peter Turnley, Yasuyoshi Chiba, and many other talented individuals.What does Innovation mean to you?
From a street photographer's perspective, innovation is about pushing the boundaries and exploring new ways to capture and present the world around us. It involves finding unique angles, perspectives, and techniques that challenge the traditional norms of street photography.Innovation in street photography means embracing new technologies and tools that enhance our creative process. It could involve incorporating advanced camera equipment, experimenting with different lenses or shooting styles, or even exploring the potential of editing software and post-processing techniques.
Additionally, innovation extends beyond technical aspects. It encompasses the ability to think outside the box, to see beyond what is obvious, and to capture the essence of a moment in a fresh and captivating way. It's about finding new narratives, emotions, and stories within the dynamic streets and urban environments we explore.
Are you familiar with Web3 /NFTs/Crypto?
I have been actively involved in the NFT space as an artist and collector since 2021. I initially started showcasing my artwork on Foundation and later expanded to creating collections on platforms like OpenSea and Manifold. One of my notable series, "Kirkpinar Memories," which has received awards, can be found on Sloika. While I primarily utilize the Ethereum blockchain for my NFT activities, I also have an interest in collecting and minting on the Tezos blockchain.Is AI your Enemy or Friend?
AI is undoubtedly a friend to me. Although I grew up watching movies like Terminator that portrayed AI leading to apocalyptic scenarios, I believe it has the potential to greatly assist our progress. In my daily life, I rely on AI, such as ChatGPT, for various tasks. It has been invaluable in overcoming language barriers and facilitating communication. Additionally, I utilize AI image models like stable diffusion and Midjourney, which have enhanced my artistic endeavors. Furthermore, AI features integrated into software like Lightroom, such as masking capabilities, have significantly streamlined my workflow. Overall, AI has proven to be a helpful tool that supports and augments my creative and everyday experiences.Please tell us a bit about a recent piece of the art world that has particularly interested you.
A recent piece in the art world that has particularly captivated my interest is Yuyu's “Renaissance series”. The one artwork that stands out is 'Bad Bunny, Dead Bunny'
”Draws upon the Mandarin slang term ‘Rabbit’, a derogatory label aimed to discriminate queer, trans, and gender variant individuals. The work builds on Solomon J Solomon’s painting ‘Samson’ from 1887 to create an allegorical visualization of queer experiences. Depicting a biblical hero weakened and bound by the Philistines after revealing the source of his strength to his lover Delilah, this work approaches the overreaching topic of the tortured genius through a societal perspective, establishing a daunting metaphor for how, when trust is placed in the wrong hands, the results can be detrimental to the individual’s existence. Through its vivid and discomforting imagery, ‘Bad Bunny, Dead Bunny’ invites viewers to reflect on their own potential complicity in perpetuating injustice, violence, and segregating stereotypical perceptions.” -excerpt from the artist’s description.
” My advice to younger artists would be to embrace their authenticity and unique voices. Artists need to resist the temptation of imitating others in an attempt to achieve success. Instead, they should focus on discovering their own artistic identity and expressing themselves genuinely.
Artistic success stems from a deep connection to one's perspective, emotions, and experiences. By staying true to themselves and nurturing their creativity, young artists can create work that resonates with authenticity and originality. This genuine expression will attract an audience who appreciates their unique voice and vision.
Lastly, don't be disheartened by setbacks or self-doubt. Keep pushing forward, stay persistent, and believe in the power of your creativity. Success will come when you embrace your true self and let your art reflect your authentic voice. ”
