Please tell us a bit about yourself.
I'm s.rodan, a digital and physical artist from Istanbul. I create artworks about my memories and the broken culture of corporatism. My main inspirations are deconstruction, old consoles and Bauhaus and I frequently mix these to create a new aesthetic that feeds from utopian arts. What mediums do you use to express yourself?
My primary medium is digital, as I use emulators to create art. However, I started my journey with writing short stories, painting, and collaging, which I still do occasionally. I strive to explore new mediums, but my regular tools include a scanner, pencils, my trusted ZX Spectrum emulator, and After Effects. Are you a Solo or Collaborative artist?
I shine better by collaborating, and even in a solo artwork, I become two people that collaborates on a piece. How do you/your perception of art differ from others?
I don't think it differs much, but I believe almost anything can be considered art, with one small exception: not everything can possess 'geist.' Art infused with 'geist' is rare and less concerned with worldly matters. Additionally, I believe that all artists, in a way, have an inclination towards mischief, as we possess an inherent desire to infect others' minds with our 'viruses,' which we refer to as art pieces. Is there a fav artist or an artwork that inspired you/your style?
My art is mostly inspired by Barbara Kruger and Theo van Doesburg, as they influenced my decision to pursue art. However, I draw greater inspiration from philosophy and mathematics as source materials, due to my background in corporate engineering. What was the last Exhibition you visited?
The exhibition ”L’AIR DE PARIS” of the legendary Arkas collection, in İzmir. Lucien Arkas is one of the greatest local collectors. It featured the stories of artists who experienced Paris, leading to a pivotal moment in Turkish Contemporary Art. Curated by Dr. Necmi Sönmez, it showcased paintings, sculptures, ceramics, photographs, and drawings, along with exhibition posters, letters, and various documents. These artworks delve into the transformative dynamics encountered by Turkish artists who journeyed from Turkey to Paris, the art capital, between 1945 and 1968.What does Innovation mean to you?
Innovation is in the points of collission where ideas cross paths and form new ideas. Are you familiar with Web3 /NFTs/Crypto?
I've been in crypto longer than I've been an artist. I began my journey by mining dogecoin just when it had launched, late 2014-early 2015. Then I had to focus on my studies and came back as an artist in early 2021.Any other projects?
”New Utopian Arts” is a small formation that feeds on Bauhaus, Suprematism and De Stijl that I founded but does not reject the figure like them. Since it is 100 years later, we aim to highlight the areas that are parallel to the experimentalism of that period, not the same.Is AI your Enemy or Friend?
We are frenemies, because I use it, and train embeddings with my art. However it also can become the ultimate geist-killer if used improperly. There is no denying that. Just like any other tool honestly, but this one is newer, and definately on steroids. Please tell us a bit about a recent piece of the art world that has particularly interested you.
Egyptian artist Anubis 's research on memetics through his art is very interesting. I like divisive pieces, and the post-internet aesthetics a lot, so it was a natural favorite for me.
” My advice to young artists is to start early and never look back. I held back from sharing my art for a few years because I didn't consider myself an artist and sought external validation for this belief. However, we all have the power we need within us, so never second-guess yourselves. ”
Telling stories is the hallmark of s.rodan. His creations can be described as a captivating blend of the dark psychological elements of De Stijl, infused with the influences of visionaries like Theo van Doesburg and Barbara Kruger. The artist wholeheartedly embraces a shadowy and provocative aesthetic, fearlessly exploring realms inhabited by shadows, nightmares, and AI-induced horrors on a philosophical level. Drawing inspiration from a diverse spectrum, weaving in concepts such as simulacra. Their intellectual tapestry is enriched by the philosophical musings of luminaries like Baudrillard, Deleuze, and Sartre.
The artist's ultimate objective is to offer audiences a glimpse into one of humanity's myriad potential trajectories, with a deliberate focus on the darker, more challenging path. Their creative journey serves as a form of personal catharsis, a way to navigate and make sense of the world by delving deep into the recesses of their mind, unearthing the shadows and nightmares that fuel their boundless creative reservoir.
